No-one should still be surprised that the pandemic has been and continues to be a powerful accelerator of the digitalisation of the retail sector. Unfortunately, however, there are still too many retailers who are either resisting the trend or feel overwhelmed by the numerous demands it imposes. “Waiting isn’t an option”, says Frank Rehme, CEO of Kompetenzzentrum Handel. At the same time, he also points out that it is advisable to take a gradual and cautious approach to the digitalisation of one’s own business.
In many cases, though, the retail store needs to be rethought because, according to Rehme, “retail today performs completely new tasks in our society.” It is no longer a provider of necessities, but rather a leisure activity and life enhancer.
