Food trend: preserving and pickling

3 Jul 2025

Preserving is currently enjoying a real comeback – and not just as a practical method of storing food. The food trend is also an expression of a more conscious, sustainable lifestyle and is in line with the goals of the Zero Waste movement against food waste. With the right product range, retailers can highlight their expertise in sustainability.

Summer in a jar

Whether sweet jams, spicy chutneys or pickled vegetables, more and more people are rediscovering this old tradition and bringing fresh zest to their jars with seasonal ingredients. Preserving and pickling food is particularly popular in the DIY scene and among urban gardeners. The traditional method of preservation makes it possible to conserve the rich harvest of summer while enjoying delicious, homemade products.

Natural materials

A sustainable, environmentally friendly lifestyle includes products made from natural materials such as enamel, which is produced by melting glass onto iron in a kiln. The material offers numerous advantages: it is heat-resistant, scratch-resistant, bacteria-inhibiting, easy to clean, aroma-neutral, energy-saving and, for example, manufactured by Riess in a CO2-neutral process. The material is also suitable for all types of stoves and is completely recyclable.

Out of the forest

The forest provides us with a rich harvest: in harmony with the seasons, you can find various fruits, berries and mushrooms. There is no more authentic way to eat regionally and sustainably. Not only are the fruits of the forest free, but gathering them is also fun and provides you with great supplies for the winter.

Zero Waste – saving our food

The mindful use of food plays a central role in the pursuit of sustainability. Waste prevention starts with the proper storage of food and extends to preservation through vacuum sealing or drying. Fermentation in particular is experiencing a comeback worldwide – from kimchi in Korea to Nordic pickles, this tasty culinary trend is gaining more and more followers.
