About us

Covering the table, sitting together having a meal - are these anachronisms or necessities, indispensable rituals in an ever-faster world? No one will deny that on festive occasions still the fine dishes are being taken out from the closet and set up according to fixed rulee. But what are the daily meals for me? Do not the eyes drink too, the lips, the hand?

The Keramische Werkstatt Margaretenhöhe was founded in 1924 on behalf of Margarethe Krupp, and Johannes Leßmann, a pupil of Bauhaus ceramic potter Otto Lindig, was appointed head of the company. Within the strict form canon of the Bauhaus, Leßmann establishes the tradition of a manufactory for tableware ceramics.

In 1987, Young-Jae Lee and Hildegard Eggemann, as new leaders, revive this tradition of the manufactory with Claudia Neumann and Michael Schmandt and develop a serial production that follows the principles of the Bauhaus. Today, their realization, under the leadership of Young-Jae Lee, lies in the hands of the small team of potters consisting of Michael Schmandt, Master Daniela Glattki, Shoko Ishioka and apprentice Oliver Neu.

By reconsidering the Bauhaus maxims, Young-Jae Lee, with Claudia Neumann, Michael Schmandt and Hildegard Eggemann, developed the characteristic form language of the manufactory program of the Margaretenhöhe ceramics workshop almost thirty years ago. Their most important requirements were: Each piece must be easy to throw and also to use. Every single dish, whatever its color, should be combinable with the others.

First, 25 basic elements of a kitchenware were designed:
Plates, bowls, jugs. From months of experiments, the 6-tone color scale, from shades of jade green to a broken white to rust brown, emerged. These principles of the manufactory program have not changed to this day, and are not fashionable or subject to any zeitgeist.

The ‘Edition’ extends the tableware program by additional pieces, including vases, plant containers and cans.

All the pieces thrown on the potter's wheel are made from Westerwald stone ware. The square plates are formed from plates using plaster models. The biscuit firing is carried out in an electric kiln at about 950 °C. The glazes with their matt to glossy surfaces are being fired in the gas oven at approx. 1300 °C in a reducing atmosphere.

Only environmentally friendly materials and production processes are used. All pieces are dishwasher safe and microwave safe.
