Christmas trends 2023

Unexpected. Striking. Close to nature. These are the Christmas trends 2023!

14 Sep 2023

Glitter or pure nature? What are the must-haves for Christmas 2023? At the start of the season with the highest sales turnover of the year, there are once again current inspirations and product ideas to discover for the festive season. The focus is on the Christmasworld Trends, which are determined independently each year by the trend bureau bora.herke.palmisano on behalf of Messe Frankfurt. For Christmas 2023, they are: unknown beauty_strange + gracious, calming nature_careful + pleasant and lasting ideas_passionate + evocative. These three style worlds and the exhibitors at Christmasworld indicate which colours, shapes and designs will now become really important.

Into the unknown!

Different, strange and wonderfully exciting. The unknown beauty_strange + gracious trend breaks with familiar patterns and surprises with iridescent surfaces and the interplay of light, shadow and reflection. In terms of colour, too, this exciting style world shows its delight in the unknown when extravagant shades such as azure blue, peach, magenta or wine red enter into a sizzling liaison with lovely nuances such as lemon, grey and silver.

Matching products can be found at many leading suppliers who invite you to creatively freshen up the traditional celebration with fascinating designs. Characteristic are baubles with a glossy look, such as those from Inge Glass, or the richly studded baubles from ShiShi. FW Glass achieves unexpected effects by incorporating webs of glass threads or the fluorescent surfaces typical of the trend, which FW Glass also covers with wire. Inge Glas and Krebs Lauscha inspire with implementations around the colour world of Viva Magenta and Wine Red. With their high-quality and carefully crafted lines, they prove how contemporary traditional craftsmanship really is.

Striking design icons.

The trend lasting ideas_passionate + evocative presents iconic designs in which craftsmanship, manufacture and industrial know-how come together in a modern way. The style is characterised by geometric shapes such as circular discs, cones and squares. Striking marble grains, wood structures and moirée effects stand out in the patterns. They complement the clear, elegant to flowing, subtle monochrome surfaces as well as stripes, grids, lines and relief structures. The intensive colour range extends from cool petrol and blue nuances to warm orange-red, violet and ochre to neutral, metallic tones such as pewter, iron and bronze-grey.

The marble theme is particularly striking. Krebs Lauscha presents a sophisticated series of glass spheres with wood and marble surfaces that are impressively lifelike. Vases and candlesticks made of real marble can be found at G. Wurm, among others. On the other hand, the Wenzel manufactory convinces with high-quality designer candles in noble metallic shades that fit perfectly into the idea of lasting ideas_passionate + evocative. Other brands create impressive decorations by playing with graphic and geometric shapes that serve the style world all year round. Werner Voß, for example, creates real eye-catchers with bubble-like surfaces and bold red combinations. And Jodeco Glass presents vases with characteristic shapes and an iridescent metallic touch.

The label Design im Dorf is dedicated to icons of a completely different kind and presents a modern mini nativity scene. The minimalist figures are made of stone and refined with gold, while the sturdy box functions as a stable. Once the Christmas season is over, the complete nativity scene is well stowed away and waiting for the next season. A similar idea is pursued by the porcelain Advent wreath by Räder, which encourages people to always celebrate the festival anew with a lasting object. Iconic design that has come to last.

One with natur.

The style world calming nature_careful + pleasant opens up a calm product vitality in a nature-connected minimalism. The designs show a living connection to nature and revolve around life cycles and transience, creativity and sustainable thinking. The boundaries between art, craft and technology are becoming increasingly blurred. Plant and geological designs catch the eye, including rocks, minerals and rough stones. The colours are also inspired by nature: The cooler nuances are reminiscent of lichens, mountain lakes and raw malachites. They harmonise with neutral tones such as white sand, stone grey and dark rock. A warm note is created by moss, woody rose and a mild rosé nuance.

Among other things, the Christmas tree baubles made of natural materials such as wheat, cord or carnations from ShiShi are perfect for the look. In the floristry sector, on the other hand, we work with natural and rough surfaces. New shapes and two-tone colours with a touch of gold are very much in demand, as the Dutch brand Passion for Pottery emphasises. Natural structures are also seen in greeting cards with a textile look. At Design im Dorf, they are sent as "light mail" – and reused as tea lights. Room fragrances also fit into the trend. One example is the Art Collection by the Italian brand Erbolinea. It has diffusers of its high-quality line made of Grottaglie ceramics, an Apulian craft that dates back to the 8th century BC. Erbolinea has taken up this tradition and renewed it. In collaboration with the ceramists, unique pieces are created that, together with the room fragrances in warm tones typical of the region, create an intense and exclusive atmosphere.
